PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has summoned vice-chancellor and registrar of Islamia College University (ICU), directing them to appear and explain allocation of 119 seats on quota, out of 150 seats for admission in FA/FSc in Islamia College Peshawar.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan and Justice Roohul Amin Khan summoned the vice-chancellor and registrar for August 19 in a writ petition. During the course of hearing, the petitioners’ lawyer Isa Khan submitted before the bench that quota system was abolished in colleges of other provinces, but it still existed in the Islamia College Peshawar.
He submitted that 80 percent of open merit seats were allocated for quota system in admissions for FA/FSc in the college. He said that due to quota system, only 31 students had the chance to be admitted on open seats out of 150 seats as rest of seats were allocated to different quotas.
Giving details of quota seats, the lawyer said that out of 150 seats, quota was allocated for students of tribal agencies and Frontier Regions, male and female quota in sports, quotas for sons of employees of the University of Engineering and Technology, Agricultural University staff, University of Peshawar and Islamia Collegiate School Peshawar, O-level students, Afghan nationals and foreign students.
The lawyer argued that it was injustice with the students of other districts of the province as they have a rare chance to get admission on 31 seats only.He requested the court to declare the quota system illegal and issue order to the university and college administration to fill all 150 seats on open merit.
