ABUJA: Nigeria have appointed German Gernot Rohr as the national team’s new technical adviser on a two-year contract, the country’s football federation said on Tuesday.
The former Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon coach will work alongside Salisu Yusuf, who has been operating in a caretaker role since former coach Sunday Oliseh resigned in February after claiming several breaches to his contract.
Officials said the 63-year-old Rohr will be presented to the public and media next week.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee at the weekend recommended Rohr’s appointment after meeting him in Abuja.
His immediate task will be to help Nigeria qualify for the 2018 World Cup after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations for the second straight time.
Nigeria begin their qualifying campaign on October 3 in Zambia.
Algeria and Cameroon are the other teams in a difficult qualifying pool, with only the group winners advancing to Russia 2018.
