Seminar disseminates information to potatoes growers

OKARA: A seminar was held to disseminate information to potatoes growers about enhancing production of the crop.
The seminar was held under the aegis of the Okara Potato Growers Society (OPGS). The OPGS office-bearers and members had invited famous officials of an internationally acknowledged agricultural Singapore-based Chinese organisation to spread awareness among growers regarding the use of fertilizers, pesticides, seed, kinds of potatoes and the level of the crop in Okara and Punjab.
OPGS vice president Chaudhry Maqsood Ahmad Jatt described aims, targets and performance of the organisation since 1985, when seeds of potatoes were brought from Mansehra.
He said when the import of potatoes seed from India and other countries was started at government level, the OPGS opposed the import.
He said the OPGS brought changed mode of agriculture to modern methods and now Okara produces 75 per cent of total potato yield in the country.
The Singapore-based organisation’s representatives Abid Ziauddin, Dr Ijazul Hassan Qalbi, Dr Akbar Jan Niaz and Ahmad Nadeem presented a detailed introduction of their company.
They told growers about use of fertilizers and other useful things.
OPGS director Dr Afzaal Rizvi said potato growers needed original and comparatively fertilizers, pesticides and seed.
