Call to compensate value-added textile sector
From Our Correspondent
FAISALABAD: The value-added textile sector has demanded the facility of additional duty drawback to compensate the multiple domestic and international negative happenings that have affected the already dwindling exports.
In a statement here on Friday, Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association central chairman Dr Khurram Tariq said that the value-added textile sector was under severe stress particularly due to the unprecedented reduction in cotton production, increase in its prices and sudden depreciation of Euro and Pound in the wake of Brexit. Due to 34 per cent sharp decline in cotton production this year, its prices had also recorded an upward trend in local and international markets, he added. He said despite gravity of the situation, the government had not yet taken any remedial step to compensate the value-added textile sector. He suggested that the government immediately withdraw 15 per cent regulatory duty on the import of yarn and duties on cotton to ensure free availability of raw material to the value-added export sector, enabling it to compete with regional competitors and maintain its position in the international market. Similarly, in view of acute shortage of cotton in the domestic market, the government should immediately impose complete ban on export of cotton and yarn to ensure availability of raw material in abundance to the value-added textile sector, he added. Khurram said that steep decline in the value of Euro and Pound after Brexit was yet another factor that had badly affected the textile exporters. He said that India had already downward adjusted its currency to remain competitive in the markets. On the same line, Pakistan should also adjust its currency in Dollar terms, he added.
DIRECT FLIGHTS DEMANDED: Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) acting president Syed Zia Alamdar Hussain has demanded direct flights between Pakistan and China to facilitate the frequent travellers between the two countries.
In a statement here on Friday, he said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) had almost doubled the passengers load on the route but there was no direct flight and frequent travellers had to use alternate route via Thailand. “This lengthy route not only adds additional financial burden but also consumes almost double time as compared to the direct flight”, he added. He particularly mentioned that stopover of eight hours was very pinching on return from China. During this period, the passengers were neither provided proper accommodation nor mandatory hospitality was extended to them, he added. He said that the Pakistan-China friendship and CPEC related projects had also increased the number of Chinese working in the area. He said: “They are the frequent travellers between Pakistan and China in addition to the local importers and exporters, who travel for their business purposes.”
Zia Alamdar Hussain that the FCCI had played an important role in convincing the foreign airlines to start direct international flights from Faisalabad and at the moment five airlines, including PIA, were successfully operating direct international flights from Faisalabad to various international destinations. He said that Faisalabad was a thickly populated city while the people from the surrounding districts also used the Faisalabad airport.
