This refers to the article, ‘A day to celebrate’ (July 1) by Babar Sattar. It is heartening to see that a person who believes in meritocracy and reform has been appointed as the chief justice of the Lahore High Court. There are a few examples in the past when honest and competent persons were appointed as heads of organisations and they transformed the culture and performance levels to new heights. The examples of late Air Marshal Noor Khan as chairman PIA, Tariq Khosa ex-DG FIA, Dr Shoaib Suddle ex-IG Police and Nasir Durrani IG KP are worth mentioning.
Though the highest standards of moral integrity are required of the judiciary, we need honest and dedicated individuals in NAB, Nadra, Wapda, Railways and police as well. Let us keep our fingers crossed and wait and see if the ruling political parties at the federal and provincial levels also follow suit by appointing heads of institutions by merit alone so that the nation may celebrate such days in the future as well.
