Karachi killings

After some respite, high-profile target killings have started again in Karachi, the latest victim being Amjad Sabri. The son of CJ Sindh High Court was also abducted on gun point. The fact that the Rangers have been able to restore peace in Karachi is generally acknowledged. However, complete peace cannot be restored until the political forces in Karachi rise above their vested interests and wholeheartedly support the operation. The Supreme Court has some time back declared that all political parties in Karachi had militant wings who were mainly responsible for the city’s law and order situation. Of course some banned religious outfits were also responsible.

The PPP-led Sindh government has, from time to time, resisted extending the Rangers’ authority. The MQM has been wrongly pointing out that it is the only party being persecuted. Such an attitude facilitates the interference of foreign intelligence agencies. The police in the province have been totally politicised. The Rangers are wrongly being blamed of being partisan. They have carried out an across-the-board operation. To restore complete peace in Karachi, it is imperative that all political forces rise above their vested interests and strengthen the hands of law-enforcement agencies.
