Centralised DNA database to be established across Punjab
LAHORE:The Home Department has decided to establish a centralised DNA database across the province.
The Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) will collect DNA records from across Punjab to assist in the timely identification of suspects involved in serious crimes. The Home Department has also decided to record the DNA profiles of all inmates currently held in prisons throughout Punjab. Additionally, DNA data about habitual criminals and offenders will also be collected.
Following the instructions of Secretary Home Noor ul Ameen Mengal, a working group of experts has been constituted to propose a model for the establishment of the central DNA database. Dr Muhammad Amjad, Director General of PFSA, has been appointed as the head of the working group. Other members include Professor Dr Muazzam-ur-Rehman, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB) Professor Dr Nighat Yasmeen, Head of Biomedical Sciences at King Edward Medical University; DIG Athar Waheed; and PFSA Director Administration Waleed Baig.
According to a spokesperson for the Home Department, the experts' working group will submit their recommendations regarding the preparation and procedures of the central DNA database to the Secretary Home within one week.
The spokesperson added that the central DNA database will significantly enhance the performance of the justice system. It will facilitate suspect identification and assist law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in expediting the trial and decision-making process for cases.
