Stick to the green
The Punjab government, in its efforts to ease traffic congestion on city roads, has carved out separate lanes for motorcyclists. A four-foot wide green lane has been marked and separated from the existing roads for exclusive use by motorcyclists. However, the failure of the traffic police to get new traffic plans implemented has resulted in more congestion and hazards.
Motorcyclists continue to share the main portion of the road with other traffic, thus increasing traffic density. The width of existing roads has been substantially reduced for cars, rickshaws and buses. There must be a coordinated effort by concerned agencies to educate and direct motorcyclists to use the green lane only, leaving the remaining part for other traffic.
