Illegal occupants evicted from PU hostels
LAHORE:Punjab University (PU) administration and police evicted hundreds of illegal occupants from hostels in a recent joint operation, which has created space for 600 morning students in the hostels on merit.
In a press statement, PU spokesman said that the university administration has allotted hostels to 300 morning students deprived of hostels, while another 300 morning students belonging to remote areas will be given hostels this week. He said that the offices are working on Saturdays and Sundays for the allotment of morning students deprived of hostels. He said that alcohol and ice were recovered from the rooms of illegal occupants during the operation and everyone knows which organisations were occupying those rooms. He said that illegal occupants were also causing a loss of millions of rupees to PU annually in terms of facilities. He said that influential illegal occupants were using inverter AC, irons and heaters without any permission and billing. He said that due to illegal occupants, the university was also deprived of Rs20 million in annual residential dues. He said that on the instructions of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali, indiscriminate action was taken against illegal occupiers. He said that student organisations are worried about the end of their monopoly in the hostels; these student organisations used to collect monthly rent from illegal occupants. He also said that PU provides the cheapest hostel facilities and a student pays only Rs2,000 per month for hostel accommodation. He said that the apparent demands of student organisations are different from their hidden demands. He said that the university administration supports and patronises positive and healthy activities.
The PU administration and police are taking action against mischievous students according to the law, the spokesman said, adding the students involved in illegal activities were also being given a full opportunity to defend themselves. He said that there would be no compromise on merit and law enforcement in the university.
