New theatre law to be introduced soon: Azma
LAHORE:Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari Friday said a new law would be introduced for theatres next week to make the theatre environment family-friendly.
In a special conversion with cultural reporters regarding the promotion of theatre and cultural activities in the province, the minister revealed that a new law for theatres will be introduced next week in consultation with all stakeholders.
The minister said "I want family-friendly theatre environment where every citizen may attend performance with their families without fear or hesitation. Azma said theatres promoting obscenity will be served three notices, and if violations persist, a lifetime ban will be imposed on the theatres across the province.
She said if any official from her department is found supporting such content, they will be immediately dismissed from service. She also announced the launch of a new family theatre at Alhamra Lahore soon, aiming to promote quality entertainment.
Furthermore, the Punjab Censor Board will be reconstituted within the next two to three days to strengthen the protection of cultural values. She stressed the global reputation of Pakistani stage dramas and expressed the government's commitment to continue this legacy with high standards and ethical values. The minister also announced that the Punjab government will enthusiastically celebrate Culture Day on April 17, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz participating in the festivities.
The minister said: "I am trained to bring positive change, not to ridicule anyone." She made it clear that Punjab Arts Council notices will now be taken seriously and strictly enforced. DGPR Ghulam Saghir Shahid, DG PUKAAR Tanveer Majid, and Executive Director Alhamra Tauqeer Kazmi were also present on the occasion.
