A river without water

A river without water

Pakistan is home to one of the world’s largest dams, the Tarbela Dam, built on the Indus River. Yet, despite this massive infrastructure, water shortages continue to plague Sindh. Year after year, we hear about new proposals for more dams, more canals, more diversions, but the fundamental issue remains. Why is the largest river in Pakistan running dry, especially in a province that depends so heavily on it for agriculture and livelihood? Even more concerning is the new canal project, an act that has left many baffled. That water could have rejuvenated fields, supported farmers, and nourished life across Sindh. Six more canals are now planned to be taken out from the Indus, which could further worsen the situation. If this continues, Sindh’s fertile lands may soon become barren.
