The funeral prayers for a young rescue worker who lost his life during efforts to control a massive blaze that broke out on Friday at a cardboard factory in Karachi’s Ahsanabad area were offered on Saturday.
The deceased worker, identified as Bilal Tanoli, was a member of the Rescue 1122 and lost his life during the intense firefighting and rescue operation.
His funeral prayers were offered on Saturday at Umar Farooq Masjid located on Manzil Pump, Waziristan Road, in Landhi. The ceremony was attended by Rescue 1122 Director General Abid Shaikh, rescue officials, relatives and a large number of residents of the area.
Tanoli was laid to rest amid emotional scenes, as his colleagues and family mourned the loss of the dedicated frontline worker.
An inquiry has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, which gutted the factory and caused extensive damage. Firefighting efforts, led by fire tenders, lasted several hours before the flames were brought under control.
Speaking to media, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaan Khan said the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit and had been declared a Category Three blaze due to its intensity.
The young rescuer was second among four brothers and had joined Rescue 1122 just a year ago. He was unmarried and had aspired to join the Pakistan Army, where his elder brother is currently serving.
The fire at the cardboard factory located in Ahsanabad had erupted on Friday afternoon.
Fire Officer Miraj said the blaze spread on both the storeys of the building and a total of 10 fire brigade vehicles were called at the site along with a snorkel to assist with the firefighting operation.
Additionally, private water tankers were also summoned to support the operation.
Firefighters reported that the fire broke out at around 3pm and efforts to control it started soon. They said the initial phase of the operation was focused on containing the flames to prevent further spread.
