LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered for the launch of a registration drive for workers employed in shops, workshops, and small enterprises across the province.

In a meeting with Provincial Minister for Labour Faisal Ayub Khokhar, she announced that registered workers would be eligible for grants and various financial benefits through the Labour Department.

She directed the authorities concerned to strictly ensure implementation of minimum wage laws in shops, petrol pumps, and factories across Punjab. “There must be a crackdown on enterprises that fail to comply with minimum wage regulations,” she stated firmly.

Highlighting a major shift in labour policy, the CM said, “For the first time in Punjab’s history, workers in small businesses and industrial units will be formally registered.” She instructed officials to improve working conditions in industrial units and to scale up labour registration efforts throughout the province.

Additionally, she called for a comprehensive plan to launch a ration card programme tailored for labourers, aiming to enhance their social and economic security.

Expressing deep sorrow over the recent death of a minor child due to electrocution at Shahdara Teaching Hospital, CM Maryam Nawaz sought an immediate report from the health secretary. She directed that strict legal action be taken against those found responsible after a thorough investigation.

Separately, the Punjab government, under the leadership of CM Maryam Nawaz, achieved a significant milestone by providing unprecedented relief to the public during Ramazan through its innovative Sahulat bazaars. By implementing a smart and efficient policy, the government managed to save a remarkable Rs1.1 billion, ensuring affordable access to essential food items across the province.
