Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro on Friday said that there is no valid basis to build new irrigation canals in the country when the Indus River system does not have any additional water for any such fresh irrigation project.
Shoro said in a video message that equitable water distribution in the entire province has become a big challenge for the Sindh government due to persistent water shortage in the Indus River.
He mentioned that the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the concerned people of the province have been opposing the construction of new canals on the Indus River. He said the opposition political parties have been unduly agitating against the PPP on this issue. The controversial canals project is yet to be approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council owing to the Sindh government’s efforts, he added.
He also said progress on the canals project has been halted due to the PPP’s opposition to the plan. The PPP has made the federal government understand that this issue is not as simple as it seems to be, he added. “The PPP will never be silent on this issue because of the sheer anti-Sindh nature of these proposed canals.”
