ABBOTTABAD: The “Gallies and Chitral Bashkar Garamchashma Biosphere Reserves” would play a vital role in biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and ecological research.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet, in its recent meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, unanimously approved the gazette notification for the designation of these areas as Biosphere Reserves. The decision acknowledges the ecological and socio-economic significance of the reserves.
The “Gallies and Chitral Bashkar Garamchashma Biosphere Reserves” contribute to preserving unique ecosystems, promoting eco-tourism, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Their designation aligns with international conservation standards under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
Given Pakistan’s environmental challenges, these efforts are crucial. In 2018, only 12 percent of the country’s land area was classified as an environmentally protected zone.
Additionally, Pakistan is one of the six countries most vulnerable to climate change, with just 5 percent forest cover compared to the global average of 31 percent.
The declaration of these areas as Biosphere Reserves will enable Pakistan to access international funding for conservation and sustainable development projects. UNESCO’s MAB Programme has already approved their designation, recognizing their ecological importance and role in promoting sustainable conservation practices in the country.
The provincial cabinet has directed the Climate Change, Forestry, Environment and Wildlife Department to implement conservation measures, engage local communities, and conduct periodic monitoring to ensure the long-term sustainability of the reserves.
The gazette notification will be issued under Section 30 of the KP Wildlife and Biodiversity Act, 2015.
