This letter refers to the news report ‘IMF allows Re1 cut in power tariff’ (March 28, 2025). This power tariff cut is insignificant, at least at first glance. However, the important fact is that it is a step in the right direction for which due credit must be given to the incumbent government. The report claims that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that nations do not progress through IMF programmes and expressed the hope that this would be Pakistan’s last such programme.
I endorse the premier’s perspectives. Had the IMF not been around at present, the government could well have facilitated the nation with a handsome power tariff cut, just as the summer season is about to take off. However, the IMF does give us sound advice from time to time, which we must follow if we wish to achieve our long-term development goals.
