LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday directed the authorities concerned to formulate an effective operational plan to protect the population in Taunsa from the spread of AIDS at the earliest.
Chairing a special meeting, she reviewed the causes behind the outbreak and instructed officials to not only identify the reasons for the spread but also hold accountable those responsible for criminal negligence. She ordered the establishment of a joint mission comprising UNICEF, WHO and the Punjab Health Department to investigate the medical history of affected children from April 7 to 14 and to conduct household screenings in the affected areas.
“The joint mission will present recommendations for the prevention and control of AIDS,” the chief minister stated. She further directed authorities to implement immediate and effective measures for protection of at-risk populations and called for a robust operational plan to address the crisis. In response to the situation, special AIDS treatment centres have been set up at Taunsa Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital and other medical facilities.
CM Maryam Nawaz directed that all AIDS-affected children in the region must receive free treatment and warned that any negligence in their care would not be tolerated.
In a separate development, CM Maryam Nawaz commended the Faisalabad police for swiftly apprehending the main accused in a gang-rape case that occurred during a robbery.
“Incidents of rape against women are absolutely unacceptable,” she asserted. “These acts are shameful, and ensuring justice requires immediate and effective action.”
The chief minister personally monitored the operation until the arrest was made. She also directed authorities to ensure strict punishment for the perpetrators and ordered the immediate arrest of two accomplices of the accused, Ali Sher.
