An Indian prisoner, Gaurav, son of Ram Anand, has reportedly committed suicide in District Jail Malir in Karachi.
Jail authorities said the incarcerated man hanged himself in a washroom of the jail. The Malir Jail administration stated that investigations were under way regarding the circumstances of the suicide. The prisoner had been shifted to the District Jail Malir on February 17, 2022.
According to District Jail Malir Superintendent Arshad Shah, the Indian man committed suicide between the night of March 24 and 25. Gaurav was remanded to the prison on February 17, 2022 by a District West judicial magistrate in connection with the FIR 90/2022 Under the sections 3/4 of the Foreign Act and 3/9 of the Fishery Act at Docks police station, said the jail superintendent.
He added that on March 25, 2025 the duty staff informed that the prisoner was found hanged with a rope around his neck in the bathroom of the Barrack F2 of the Circle No 6 where the Indian prisoners are confined. A doctor examined him and declared him dead at about 2:20am.
Shah revealed that consultations were taking place with the Indian consulate regarding Gaurav’s nationality and documents. The deceased prisoner was housed with other Indian inmates and was known to speak very little.
