PESHAWAR: A women rights activist on Monday demanded reinvestigation into the murder case of a young girl, who was killed under mysterious circumstances, to bring her killers to justice.

Speaking at a press conference here, Shahida Rehman claimed that the main accused in the murder case of Ambreen were still at large and the police were arresting innocent people.

The women rights activist representing Ababil Human Rights Organisation said that several people, including members of a local jirga, had been arrested, but the prime accused were still at large. Shahida Rehman claimed the police were reluctant to apprehend the main accused under pressure from some influential persons.

She alleged that the police were backing the influential people behind this murder. She asked the government to transfer the case to the Counter-Terrorism Department to expose the corrupt and apprehend the accused.  She accused the mother of Ambreen of being the one of the prime suspects, saying that she should be arrested and made to spill the beans.

“Being a women rights activist, I twice came from Karachi to Abbottabad and personally investigated the case, but the police have avoided arresting the accused,” she claimed.

It may be recalled that Ambreen, the daughter of a poor labourer, was burnt alive in a van near her house in Makol village near Donga Gali in Abbottabad.

Ambreen, a 9th grade student was mentally unstable, according to the local people. Her death under mysterious circumstances trigged protests and demands from the people to properly investigate the murder case and punish the accused.
