Rawalpindi : Like the rest of the world, Pakistan also observed World Water Day on Saturday, highlighting the pressing issue of water conservation amid growing climate challenges.
To mark the occasion, the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Rawalpindi organised an awareness walk, with Managing Director Muhammad Saleem Ashraf, senior officials, and staff members actively participating. Speaking on the occasion, MD Wasa emphasised that water scarcity is a serious issue in Pakistan, exacerbated by climate change. He urged citizens to adopt responsible water usage practices to ensure the sustainability of clean and safe water reserves. “Pakistan is facing a drought-like situation due to climate change, and immediate steps are necessary to preserve our water resources,” he stated.
MD Wasa also stressed the role of afforestation in mitigating environmental challenges, noting that WASA Rawalpindi is actively participating in a tree plantation campaign in line with the vision of the Punjab government and Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
This year, the United Nations has chosen ‘Glacier Preservation’ as the theme for World Water Day, aiming to highlight the impact of rising temperatures on global glaciers and the subsequent reduction in water reserves. Addressing this challenge is crucial to securing water supplies for future generations.
Director Admin Wasa, Muhammad Umar Farooq, reiterated the agency’s commitment to raising awareness about water conservation and guiding citizens toward sustainable practices. “Wasa Rawalpindi continues to educate the public on the importance of water conservation, and we urge everyone to play their part in preventing water wastage,” he said. The observance of World Water Day serves as a reminder that collective action is essential in tackling water-related challenges and ensuring a sustainable future.
