The Sindh police chief, Ghulam Nabi Memon, on Wednesday chaired a meeting on crime management system to discuss steps taken by the provincial police for improving the investigation department and Crime Data Management System.
The meeting was held at the Central Police Office Karachi and attended by Karachi Additional IG Javed Alam Odho, DIGs of Counter-Terrorism Department, Crime and Investigations, Establishment, Headquarters, Investigations Karachi, Finance and IT, and other police officers. Divisional DIGs, SSPs and SDPOs participated in the meeting through video link.
The IT DIG gave a detailed briefing to the meeting on the police’s new website and IGP Complaint Cell application.
Officials said several decisions were taken during the meeting including improving the Police Station Record Management System (PSRMS), Sindh police’s new website and IGP Complaint Cell application that has been fully activated.
All the police stations and investigation department offices would now be able to register crimes directly on the PSRMS. They would also be able to register digital evidence so that the judiciary could see that through the application.
The police chief said the new website of the Sindh police had been introduced for the public, which listed all the facilities, services and emergency response numbers, and other key information.
Moreover, it was said that the IGP Complaint Cell had been made paperless for the prompt and effective redress of public complaints. From now on, any complaint would be sent and received through the application to the relevant officer.
In view of the incidents of terrorism in other provinces, the meeting decided to take extraordinary security measures on the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Ali (RA) on the 21st Ramazan.
“We need to equip policing with world-class standards, modern requirements and technology,” IGP Memon said, adding that there was an urgent need to control crime by moving away from the traditional procedures.
In the future, crime-related meetings in all districts, units and CPO would be held as per the data of the PSRMS, decided the meeting. It was said that all the districts should make their SDPOs more active and give them responsibilities regarding police station management and operational activities.
The SDPOs in Karachi had provided considerable assistance in installing cameras and done other commendable work, the meeting was told.
The IGP said all district officers and DIGs should brief the investigation officers concerned regarding the PSRMS as disciplinary action would be taken against officials who did not enter data in the PSRMS.
It was also decided that meetings would be held every Friday for the improvement of the IGP Complaint Cell.
The Sindh police chief said the IGP Complaints Cell had been made public and online application IDs had been provided to all officers and unit in-charges. After receiving a public complaint, it would be sent to the relevant officer through the application and would be received in the same way. The meeting ordered all the SSPs to activate the complaint cell in their districts, mobilise the staff and ensure the redress of the complaints.
The police were also told to strengthen intelligence to not only keep an eye on suspicious persons but also compile data of their activities.
The relevant officers were told to ensure installation of cameras and strict surveillance along the procession routes of the 21st Ramazan.
