KARACHI: The 35th National Games will be held in Karachi from May 1–9 as decided in the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Executive meeting held in Lahore.

This was the first meeting of the POA Executive Committee under its newly elected President, Arif Saeed. Sources who attended the meeting said that 27 sports have been finalised for the National Games, with the final list of disciplines to be confirmed on March 15. They also said that five additional sports may be included based on their popularity among local fans.

The Sindh Olympic Association (SOA) will organise the Games according to the approved schedule. The meeting also focused on strengthening ongoing initiatives and introducing new measures to improve athlete development, governance, and collaboration with stakeholders in the country.

In his opening remarks, President Arif Saeed stressed the need to refine athlete pathways, prioritise their well-being, and create an environment where they can perform at their best. He reaffirmed the POA’s commitment to working with public authorities and both public and private sectors to build sustainable athlete support systems and foster an active sports culture in Pakistan.

There will be 27 sports for men and 23 for women. Additionally, the POA Sports Commission will assess the inclusion of six more sports based on the Committee’s approved principles.

Marking a significant milestone for youth sports, the Committee also approved the first-ever National Youth Games, scheduled to be held in Lahore from September 7 to 13. This inaugural event will provide a structured platform for athletes aged 14-17, helping to nurture talent for the Asian Youth Games and the Youth Olympic Games.

President Arif Saeed will present a concept note to the Government of Pakistan to highlight its role in youth sports development. To support emerging athletes, the POA will introduce a registration framework through regional and provincial Olympic Associations, including scholarships and specialised training.
