PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) information secretary Sheikh Waqas on Monday expressed serious concerns over the restrictions on meetings with party founder Imran Khan.
“The party is deeply troubled by the continuous denial of access to Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated under conditions similar to those reserved for terrorists,” he told a press conference here.
He said that despite being allowed only one meeting in six months. “The court has ruled that meetings with Imran Khan should be permitted, yet we are repeatedly denied access for weeks,” he claimed.
Sheikh Waqas went on to add that Imran Khan’s legal team was also being prevented from meeting him, despite the numerous cases against him.
He criticised what he called the government’s defiance of court orders, stating that the legal system in the country had become paralysed.
He also revealed that Imran Khan’s spouse, Bushra Bibi, had also been denied meetings with him. “And even phone conversations with his children have been restricted,” he added. However, he reassured supporters that Imran Khan remains in good health and dismissed reports about his deteriorating condition as false propaganda.
He announced that PTI would approach the courts to ensure regular medical checkups for the party founder in prison.
Calling for immediate action, Sheikh Waqas demanded that Imran Khan’s lawyers and medical professionals be granted access to him. He also criticised the government for its economic policies, saying that inflation had reached unbearable levels. He accused the authorities of spending millions on self-promotion across media channels while the country’s system remains dysfunctional.
He claimed that during PTI’s tenure, programmes like the Ehsaas initiative were in place to support the public, whereas the incumbent federal government had put huge financial burdens on the poor people.
