The recent increase in the number of Covid-19 and influenza cases has raised concerns and speculation about another potential outbreak of these infections. The National Institute of Health has been closely following the trends and have reassured public regarding any surge in cases. Meanwhile, it is important to understand the respiratory illnesses caused by these two viruses and take measures to protect oneself. Covid-19 and influenza are respiratory infections caused by different viruses. Both can cause mild to severe symptoms, including cough, fever, and fatigue, and can be fatal, especially for high-risk groups such as older adults, those with chronic conditions, and pregnant women. The viruses spread similarly, primarily through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, or speaking, and via contaminated surfaces. Poorly ventilated and crowded spaces increase the risk of transmission. It is also important to note that both viruses have the potential to cause pandemics.

Though Covid-19 and influenza are treated differently, supportive care like oxygen therapy is common for severe cases of both illnesses. Importantly, antivirals for one virus are ineffective against the other. Vaccines for Covid-19 and influenza are separate and tailored to their respective viruses. Influenza vaccines are updated annually based on circulating strain and administered in late September and October. Receiving both vaccines simultaneously is safe, enhancing protection against severe illness from these respiratory infections. To reduce risks, one should stay updated on vaccinations, practice respiratory hygiene, clean hands regularly, and wear masks in high-risk settings. Seek care early in case of severe symptoms to prevent complications.
