ISLAMABAD: In recognition of her efforts to advance women’s political leadership, Member of National Assembly Shaista Pervez Malik has been appointed the country ambassador for Pakistan by Women Political Leaders (WPL), a global network of women politicians.

The prestigious appointment was made by WPL president and founder Salvana Coach Mehran, as part of the organisation’s mission to promote female political empowerment worldwide.

In her new role, Shaista will work to further the cause of women’s political rights and leadership in Pakistan. Her nomination was endorsed by PMLN chief organising officer Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who recognised Malik’s dedication to advancing women’s voices within political spheres.

A member of the National Assembly’s standing committees on climate change, education and national health services, Shaista has been a consistent advocate for gender equality in political decision-making.

She was first elected as MNA in 2013 on a reserved seat and has been re-elected twice since, with her most recent term beginning in 2023 after winning the NA-133 seat following the death of her late husband and former MNA, Pervez Malik.

Shaista, who is also the mother of state minister for finance Ali Pervez Malik, said with that WPL appointment, she would continue to help shape policies that amplified women’s voices in the country’s political landscape.
