LAHORE:Investigation police in Mozang have arrested a fugitive wanted in a 13-year old murder case and recovered the weapon used in the crime here on Tuesday.
According to a police spokesperson, the suspect, Saqlain Shah, had been on the run since 2011 after allegedly killing a government employee, Khalid Farooq Anjum, over a personal grudge. Police said Saqlain Shah, who was also a government employee, had been suspended from his job and blamed the victim for his dismissal. Acting on this resentment, he allegedly shot and killed Anjum before fleeing the scene. After years of evasion, the suspect has finally been apprehended, and police have recovered the murder weapon. Officials stated that further legal proceedings are underway.
Homicide prevention unit set up
In a bid to prevent violent crimes, Lahore police have decided to set up a Homicide Prevention Unit aimed at tackling murder cases stemming from family disputes and longstanding enmities. According to police officials, over 100 people lost their lives in such conflicts last year, while 50 women were brutally murdered following domestic disputes. The new unit will focus on identifying and addressing potential homicide threats before they escalate into violence. Initially, the Homicide Prevention Unit will be established in the offices of all operational zones across the city. Officers within the unit will collaborate with Special Branch and local police stations to monitor complaints, investigate threats, and take proactive measures. Officials say the initiative is part of broader efforts to reduce violent crime and enhance public safety in Lahore.
