We often come across news about the burning or seizing of smuggled goods worth millions of rupees. Such burnt goods, besides banned items, include good quality imported cigarettes and other items worth millions of rupees which could have been auctioned in the open market to earn money instead.
Accordingly, if it is not mandatory to burn such good quality saleable goods under the current rules, the authorities may consider auctioning them in the open market instead of burning them.
