As reported in the print media, a government organisation is planning to buy over a thousand new 1300 cc cars for a whopping Rs6 billion. Now, generally speaking, any functioning organisation would not require vehicles in such massive quantities. All established entities are authorised a certain number of vehicles. Prior to purchase of any new or additional vehicles, a fresh additional transport authorisation case must be prepared with detailed justification for each new vehicle. The organisation must also specify in real terms how the purchase of new cars will increase their efficiency. An independent high powered technical committee must scrutinise the case, given the vast sums involved, to ascertain the need and type of cars to be purchased. The poor nation can ill afford any lavish spending and loss of precious taxpayers’ money.
