Price-hike, poor quality of fruit, vegetables irk locals

GUJRANWALA: Locals Saturday complained of higher prices of food items and poor quality of fruit and vegetables at Ramazan Bazaars established in all tehsils of Gujranwala.

They said officials of the district administration were focused on provision of sugar and flour on subsidized rates but they were ignoring complaints regarding price-hike and poor quality of fruit and vegetables. Traders, shopkeepers and vendors, who have their stalls at Ramazan Bazaars, said the market committee officials had fixed prices of fruit, vegetables and other commodities without consulting them. They alleged that rate lists prepared by the market committees in Gujranwala were not genuine. A citizen said mangoes were being sold for Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg before the holy month of Ramazan and now at Ramazan Bazaars mangoes were being sold for Rs 150 per kg.

He said in the same was prices of dates, bananas, oil, chicken and other commodities were also higher in comparison to the rates before Ramazan.

The visitors accused the district and tehsil municipal administrations of such sorry state of things.

Several people blamed flour mills and sugar mills administrations for supplying bags of lesser weight at Ramazan Bazaars. The visitors urged the Punjab chief minister to take serious notice of the situation.

BODY RETRIEVED: The body of an unidentified man was found here from Upper Chenab Canal near Therri Sansi, Gujranwala on Saturday.

Reportedly, passers-by spotted a body floating in the canal and informed the police. The police shifted the body to the DHQ Hospital.

Hands and feet of the body were tied with a rope and it carried torture marks as well.

Police are investigating.

MAN, SISTER-IN-LAW BEATEN: A man and his sister-in-law were humiliated by locals for their illicit relationship at Shehbaz Colony in Sabzi Mandi police limits, Gujranwala on Saturday.

Reportedly, Asim was got married with Sundas five years ago. He allegedly established illicit relations with his sister-in-law Sunbal.

On the day of the incident, locals found Asim and Sunbal at his house in an objectionable condition. They blackened his face and beat the couple with shoes. Following a tip-off, Sabzi Mandi police reached the spot and arrested seven people, included Majeed, Nazim Shah, Mehmood, Riaz and Nasir. Police are investigating.

CASE AGAINST THREE ORDERED: Anti-Corruption Establishment Gujranwala Director Rana Abdul Shakoor Saturday ordered cases against three government officials on charges of corruption and misuse of power.

Reportedly, applications were submitted with the Anti-Corruption Department against Naseer Patwari, sub-inspector Iftikhar and constable Qaisar.

In inquiries the allegations leveled against them were proved correct and the director ordered cases against the officials.

FATHER, DAUGHTER KILLED: A man and his daughter were killed in a road accident here on GT Road near Wazirabad. Hafiz Saeed, 40, and his daughter Iqra, 8, were riding a motorcycle and near Wazirabad a vehicle hit them, leaving the father and his daughter dead on the spot.
