Imam likely to replace Saim
LAHORE: Pakistan’s national cricket team may see a significant change as opener Imam-ul-Haq is likely to return to the squad, replacing the injured Saim Ayub, for the upcoming home Test series against the West Indies. The series is set to begin on January 17 in Multan.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to announce the final squad next week after a critical meeting of the selection committee. The meeting will take place following Chief Selector Aqib Javed’s return to Pakistan, scheduled for Thursday.
Sources have revealed that, in addition to Imam-ul-Haq, off-spinner Sajid Khan is also in contention for a spot in the squad, while fast bowler Shaheen Afridi may make a much-anticipated return. Meanwhile, there is speculation that opener Abdullah Shafique might be dropped from the squad due to his inconsistent performances.
Meanwhile, Saim Ayub, who suffered an ankle injury during the Cape Town Test against South Africa, is currently undergoing treatment at Cleveland Hospital in London. The 21-year-old opener sustained the injury while fielding and was sent to London on the special instructions of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
Upon his arrival in the UK, Saim was warmly received by officials from the Pakistan High Commission. His medical evaluations, including X-ray and MRI scans, are being conducted after reaching London. Based on the results, a panel of top orthopaedic specialists, including Dr. Lucky Jeyaseelan and Dr. David Redfern, will devise a treatment plan. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Muhammad Faisal, is overseeing Saim’s treatment process.
The medical team remains optimistic about ensuring Saim’s full recovery. However, it is unlikely he will be fit in time to participate in the upcoming series. The first Test of the two-match series between Pakistan and the West Indies will kick off on January 17 at the Multan Cricket Stadium. This series marks the continuation of Pakistan’s home cricket season and is an opportunity for the team to build momentum after their recent matches.
