Karachi saw around 72,000 street crime incidents in 2024. Amidst this spike in crime, the Sindh chief minister, while presiding over a meeting on the Karachi Safe City project, directed the authorities to start identifying fake and dubious vehicle number plates from February onwards and emphasised that the Safe City Authority should begin using facial recognition technology to identify suspicious individuals.
Incorporation of these advanced surveillance technologies is expected to enhance law enforcement capabilities, deter criminal activities, and can contribute to a safer urban environment.
