The second round of talks between the PTI and the government was held on Thursday in a cordial environment and was chaired by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in Parliament House. The PTI said it would present its charter of demands after consulting with PTI founder chairman Imran Khan. So far, the party has not given anything in writing, but PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui said the opposition agreed to table their charter of demands in written form after consulting with Imran Khan. The PTI has demanded Imran and other ‘political prisoners’ release as well as the formation of judicial commissions on the events of May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024]. The PTI has also given the government a deadline of January 31 to meet these demands. The first round of talks kicked off in Islamabad last month while the third round of talks will most likely be held next week for which the time and date will be decided after meeting Imran Khan. It is good to see the new year start on a positive note through this political dialogue.

PPP leader and former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has said that when the time comes, President Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan could sit together to address issues. Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah also said last week it would be better if Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan and Asif Ali Zardari sat together to resolve their issues. While the PTI leadership is engaging with the government, Imran Khan said on X (formerly Twitter) that he expects the Al-Qadir Trust case verdict to be against him. Imran and his party have not budged from May 9 being a ‘false flag’ operation and observers say that the formation of a judicial commission for May 9 will not guarantee the PTI backtracking from its false flag narrative. As for November 26, observers say that a judicial commission can actually lead to forensic investigation and the truth about the PTI workers dying during the Nov 26 protest will finally be revealed. It will also be able to ascertain if government resources were used by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur for the November 24 ‘final call’.

Imran Khan says he was indirectly approached with an offer to transfer him to his Bani Gala residence, but he wants the PTI’s detained workers and leaders to be released first before he considers any offer. PML-N leaders say that they are not aware of such an offer. In the middle of all this, what gets lost is the simple premise that political prisoners must be released if there are no valid cases against them. No government should make political cases against its rivals. It is the first week of January and we need this year to be different. Pakistan needs an end to political chaos and to put this behind us. The PTI has to understand this more than anyone else as their actions have added to polarisation and chaos. For the longest time, political parties kept asking Imran Khan and his party to sit with them and resolve their issues together instead of this constant bickering and fighting. The PTI, however, kept insisting it had no interest in talking to its political rivals and was only interested in talking to the establishment, which kept refusing the PTI’s overtures. Now that the PTI has finally decided to sit at the negotiating table with the PML-N and its allies, we hope a political solution is reached eventually.
