LAHORE: Minister for Housing Bilal Yasin on Tuesday inaugurated the underground rainwater storage project at Hussain Park, Tikka Chowk, Johar Town.
Wasa Vice Chairman Chaudhry Shahbaz Ahmed, Malik Saiful Mulk Khokhar, Minister Faisal Khokhar, MPA Shahbaz Khokhar and MD Wasa Ghufran Ahmed were also present on the occasion.
MD Ghufran Ahmed briefed the Minister on the project. According to the briefing, this project will be completed with a cost of Rs560 million in the next three months. He said the project has a capacity to store 1.5 million gallons of rainwater. Minister Bilal Yasin directed that all resources should be utilised to complete the project within the stipulated time and high quality and modern technology should be ensured in the construction work. He said that alternative arrangements should be made to minimise the difficulties faced by the local population during the project.
Sanitation system expanded in 2024
The LWMC has released its annual performance report for 2024, highlighting significant achievements under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's Suthra Punjab vision. Throughout the year, LWMC led initiatives to establish a historic sanitation system in 103 tehsils and expanded the sanitation system in Lahore to include door-to-door services in 100 union councils, cleaning of 500 markets, and 400 villages. On Eid-ul-Azha 2024, LWMC managed the disposal of 1,581,375 tons of waste in Lahore, including 54,000 tons of animal remains. Additionally, 1.4 million eco-friendly waste bags were distributed and 75,234 complaints resolved.
The Enforcement wing registered 313 FIRs, prosecuted 1,159 violators, and seized 383 vehicles involved in illegal dumping activities. The company implemented a range of measures to combat the harmful effects of smog, ensuring that major roads in the city underwent scraping, washing, sprinkling, and anti-smog activities across 45 main roads.
