Pakistan, the land of abundant resources and innumerable opportunities, is beset by multiple crises. The complex nature of these issues demands that national political leaders rise above their narrow interests and evolve a consensus on a national charter to effectively address the challenges confronting this country. Political instability and increasing polarisation has torn apart the very fabric of society, affecting all state institutions. Though the danger of economic default has faded – thanks to heavy foreign and domestic borrowings – the structural issues in Pakistan’s economy remain largely unaddressed. Without addressing these structural fault lines, lasting and sustainable economic growth will remain a pipedream.
Meanwhile, militant organisations such as the TTP and BLA are regaining strength, as seen by the increasing number of attacks on security forces and civilians. Human development indicators have deteriorated to an alarming degree and the rising population, if not curtailed, can cause a demographic disaster. The overlapping nature of the challenges facing today’s Pakistan means that any single party has no hope of taking them on by itself. Therefore, a national charter, containing a comprehensive roadmap and the input of all major political parties, is needed to steer the nation out of the current quagmire.
