Agri scientists urged to enhance efforts to ensure food security

FAISALABAD: The agricultural scientists and experts must enhance their efforts to ensure food security to meet the demand of ever-growing population.It was said by University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Sarwar Khan.

He was talking to officers of Agriculture Department Punjab at inaugural session of a four-week workshop titled Finance, Administration Management and E-governance arranged by Professional Training and Skill Development Centre, UAF.It is the 22nd workshop for the agricultural department officers which is mandatory for their promotion.

Director Professional Training Prof Dr Waqas Wakeel, Director Wheat Ayub Agriculture Research Institute Dr Javed Ahmad, Dr Nadeem and others also spoke.Dr Muhammad Sarwar Khan said that the agricultural sector was facing challenges comprising low productivity, water scarcity, climate changes and others.

He urged them to disseminate the modern agricultural trends in the farming community that will boost up productivity.He said that the university was making all out efforts to address the agricultural issues at national level with tangible research work, new varieties, outreach and skilled manpower. He said that the development of the country was depending upon the sector.

Dr Waqas Wakeel said the Continuing Education Department was established in 1963 and elevated to PTDC in 2023.It was offering 250 short courses skills development with the special focus on agriculture, livestock and rural development, he told. It had produced 10,000 manpower with short-courses so far, he added.

He said that under the training for agricultural officers, renowned resources persons of their field were imparting training to the participants.He said that the uplift of the agricultural sector was prerequisite for sustainable economic development.

POLICE PERFORMANCE REPORT: The Faisalabad Regional Police Office released its performance report for 2024.According to Regional Police Officer (RPO) Dr Muhammad Abid Khan, the police solved 40,642 cases in Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Chiniot districts, including 544 murders, 31 robbery-cum-murder cases, five kidnappings for ransom and three robbery-cum-rape cases.

He told that stolen goods worth Rs 1.4 billion were recovered during eth said period. The police arrested 1,364 members of 487 gangs, recovering Rs 414 million, he told.Additionally, 11,611 individuals wanted in serious crimes and 10 proclaimed offenders were apprehended through Interpol, he added.

The RPO said that 10,387 drug dealers were arrested while 12,723 complaints related to minority protection were resolved through Misakh Centres.To facilitate citizens, 15 driving schools and 28 traffic license centers were established, issuing 48,262 driving licences, he maintained.

For police welfare, he added, jobs were provided to seven children, 27 plots were distributed to the families of martyrs and 463 officers and personnel were promoted.The RPO emphasised that ensuring the safety of citizens and preventing crime remains the top priority of the police force.

PRICE OF CHICKEN MEAT: The price of chicken meat in Faisalabad has seen a significant rise of Rs 145 per kilogram within a week with sellers charging Rs 50-60 more than the official rate.

On December 22, the price per kilogram of chicken was Rs 446, which soared to Rs 591 on Monday.However, some sellers are charging upto Rs 640 per kilogram.Retailers attribute the overpricing to higher rates in the wholesale market, making it impossible for them to sell at the official price.

MAN KILLED DURING BRAWL: A dispute between two groups at Chak 58/GB, Jaranwala, turned into a gunfight, leaving one person dead and three injured.

According to the police, the clash between the Rajput and Arain groups resulted in the death of Tariq (40), son of Abdul Ghafoor, from the Arain group.The injured Nawaz, Shehzad and Dildar Aziz sustained gunshot wounds.
