The ongoing discourse surrounding constitutional amendments, such as those affecting the judiciary's independence and the electoral process, is a matter of critical national importance. While constitutional amendments are a legitimate means of addressing governance challenges, it is vital that they are made transparently, with the greater public interest in mind. Unfortunately, recent developments have raised concerns about the erosion of checks and balances, as well as the weakening of institutions that are meant to uphold democracy and rule of law.
Such shifts not only affect governance but also have direct consequences for the people. An unstable political environment deters foreign investment, hampers economic growth, and exacerbates public disillusionment with the system. As a young democracy, Pakistan must prioritise reforms that promote inclusivity, accountability, and institutional integrity. I urge lawmakers and policymakers to engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders, including civil society and experts, before enacting changes that shape the nation’s trajectory.
