Islamabad: The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP), demonstrated outstanding performance in 2024 by taking stringent action against traffic violators and introducing citizen-friendly measures to ensure smoother traffic flow in the federal capital, a report said.

Legal action was taken against over 800,000 vehicles and motorcycles for violating traffic rules. Serious violations led to FIRs against 1,019 individuals, while driving licenses and route permits were suspended for non-compliance.

10,841 vehicles and 40,655 motorcycles were impounded for severe violations. Over 107,000 vehicles were fined for illegal parking. 64,000 challans were issued for fancy number plates, 17,852 for tinted glasses, 56,752 for riding without helmets, and 25,555 for lane violations.

The ITP issued 64,395 driving licenses adhering to international standards and renewed 62,876 expired licenses. Additionally, 112,000 learner permits were granted to new applicants.

The administration managed traffic during over 7,000 key events, including national and international delegations' movements, the SCO conference, PSL matches, and the 2024 elections. Despite challenges, including ongoing construction projects, officers maintained traffic flow across the city.

The newly erected Citizen-Centric took initiatives including establishing six traffic counters at Police Khidmat Markaz and introduced services like Facilitation on Wheel, Education on Wheel, Highway Patrol, Night Patrol, and Smart Traffic Response Units and introduced online license renewal for senior citizens above 70, providing services at their homes.

Awareness campaigns were launched during the year. The ITP conducted 893 workshops in schools, institutions, and public spaces, educating over one million citizens about road safety and traffic rules. Students participated in visits, workshops, and a speech competition focused on traffic awareness.
