Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has launched a project to construct a new Hub canal and rehabilitate the old canal to enhance water supply to District West and District Keamari.

The project is expected to be completed within the next year.

The Hub Canal project involves upgrading the Hub Pumping Station and filter plant to increase the water supply capacity from 80 million gallons per day (MGD) to 100 MGD. The total fixed cost of the project is Rs12.76 billion.

The initiative aims at significantly improving Karachi's water supply, particularly in District West and District Keamari.

The chief operating officer (COO) of the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), Engineer Asadullah Khan, shared these details during a meeting on Wednesday with a delegation led by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam’s Sindh deputy emir Qari Muhammad Usman.

During the meeting, the JUI leader highlighted several water supply and sewerage issues in areas such as SITE, Mauripur, Baldia Town, Mominabad, Orangi and Manghopir Town. He urged the KWSC to prioritise resolving these problems.

Khan assured the delegation of swift action to address their concerns. He directed the relevant officers to resolve the identified issues on a priority basis. He also emphasised that under the mayor’s guidance, various projects were under way to improve the water supply situation in the city.

He informed the delegation that the current water demand in Karachi was 1,200 MGD compared to the 650 million gallons currently available in the KWSC system.

Despite this shortfall, the KWSC had been ensuring fair distribution of water throughout the city and working tirelessly to enhance both water supply and sewerage facilities, Khan said.

The JUI leader thanked KWSC officials and expressed hope that the organisation would continue taking effective measures to ensure equitable water distribution.

He further pointed out that the KWSC provided water at subsidised rates under the general public service (GPS) through government hydrants, supplying mosques, madrasas, imambargahs, hospitals, schools and public tanks.
