DUBAI: The UAE has announced mandatory premarital genetic testing for all Emirati couples starting January 2025, aiming to “safeguard the health of future generations,” according to the official news agency WAM.
This initiative, led by the Ministry of Health and Prevention with support from Abu Dhabi’s Department of Health, the Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services and Dubai Health, seeks to prevent genetic disorders and enhance public health.
The programme was approved during the recent UAE government annual meetings under the directives of the Emirates Genome Council.
The testing programme, which began as a pilot in Abu Dhabi in 2022, screened over 800 couples. Results showed 86 percent of couples were genetically compatible, while 14 percent required additional family planning measures.
The programme is designed to identify genetic risks early, enabling couples to make informed decisions about starting families.
The tests cover 570 genes linked to more than 840 medical conditions. By detecting potential genetic mutations, healthcare providers can reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular conditions and diabetes, contributing to better long-term health outcomes.
