AMR crisis
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health concern in Pakistan, with far-reaching implications for healthcare and public safety. The increasing resistance of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens to antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs poses a significant threat to the treatment of infections and the success of medical interventions. One of the primary reasons for the rise in AMR is the misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Self-medication, easy access to over-the-counter antibiotics, and improper prescriptions are common practices in Pakistan.
Addressing AMR requires a multi-pronged approach. Strengthening the regulation of antibiotic sales and promoting the responsible use of antimicrobials through public awareness campaigns are critical. Healthcare providers must be trained to prescribe antibiotics judiciously, and infection prevention measures should be improved in hospitals and clinics. Investing in research to develop new antibiotics and alternative treatments is also essential.
