This letter refers to the news report ‘Maryam launches second phase of scholarship programme’ (December 23, 2024). It states that the Honhar Scholarship Programme will cover the "educational expenses of 30,000 students annually and 120,000 students in the next four years will be paid by the government”. This is undoubtedly a commendable initiative by the Punjab chief minister.
My only reservation is that the Punjab government is seemingly responsible for paying 100 per cent of the educational expenses of the successful students. In my opinion, students should be required to work and contribute 25 per cent toward their expenses.
