ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Programme on AIDS/HIV has sought support of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and religious scholars to create awareness about the disease.

In this connection, the Country Director of the United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS for Pakistan, Trouble Chikoko, met with the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Dr Atta-ur-Rehman.

UN Country Director for AIDS Trouble Chikoko observed that despite collective efforts, the HIV epidemic is increasing in Pakistan, necessitating innovative and sustainable efforts.

He pointed out that there is a lack of public awareness regarding AIDS in Pakistan, and that scholars and religious schools can play a positive role in raising awareness about AIDS prevention among the public. He emphasised the importance of collaboration with relevant UN agencies and other partners in preventing AIDS, polio, and other diseases.

He noted that, alongside other measures, there is a need to raise awareness among the public, as AIDS is a dangerous disease that can be contained through public awareness and preventive measures. The meeting concluded with an agreement to further enhance cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations to curb the spread of AIDS.
