PESHAWAR: Former president Dr Arif Alvi on Monday approached the Peshawar High Court (PHC) seeking transit bail in connection with multiple cases filed against him.
The court is set to hear the petition today (Tuesday). Speaking to the media outside the court, Alvi said that he supported the trial of terrorists in the military courts but opposed it for civilians. “We support trials of terrorists in military courts, but civilian cases should not be brought to them,” he said. Criticizing the trials of civilians in military courts, Alvi noted that international bodies, including the European Union, have raised objections. “Military courts should be reserved for terrorists. When did politicians become terrorists?” he questioned, adding that footage from the events of May 9 remained missing, raising doubts about transparency in these cases. He expressed concerns over biased trials and the selective application of anti-terrorism provisions, stating, “Terrorists roam freely, while politicians are being harassed with baseless cases.” He criticized the government for filing what he termed frivolous cases against PTI workers while failing to take action against terrorists.
