Pakistan faces significant waste pollution due to rapid urbanisation and inadequate waste management systems. The country generates 48.5 million tons of waste annually, with plastic making up to 5-10 per cent of this. Improper waste disposal and burning of waste contribute to air and water pollution.
Despite government efforts, such as the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act, challenges remain due to lack of infrastructure, weak enforcement and limited resources. Collaboration across sectors is essential to address the crisis effectively.
