2-day symposium: Engagement of youth to counter extremism stressed

PESHAWAR: A two-day symposium for youth was organised at the Criminology Department at University of Peshawar on Thursday.

Titled as “Youth Resilience and Violent Extremism Exploring Diverse Perspectives and Local Solutions: Exploring Diverse Perspectives and Local Solutions,”the symposium was organized in collaboration with the Directorate of Youth Affairs KP and the Centre of Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism (KPCVE).

The event was attended by academicians, policymakers and students to address one of Pakistan’s most pressing issues.Prof Dr Basharat Hussain, chairman of the Department of Criminology, opened the symposium by stressing the importance of empowering youth to foster peace and resilience. “The engagement of youth in countering violent extremism is critical,” he said, urging students to actively participate in finding localized solutions.

Dr. Muhammad Ayaz, chief coordination officer of KPCVE, highlighted ongoing UN and EU-backed initiatives aimed at addressing issues of isolation and intolerance. He emphasised that platforms like this symposium create opportunities for youth to lead meaningful change.

Muhammad Ishtiaq from the Islamic Relief Fund reflected on IRF’s crisis management efforts, sharing lessons from supporting millions of displaced individuals during past crises. He encouraged participants to pitch innovative ideas for community development, pledging the organisation’s continued support.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Muhammad Naeem Qazi underscored the pivotal role of youth in shaping Pakistan’s future, particularly in the conflict-affected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) region. He stressed the need for peace and stability as foundations for progress.Dr. Nauman Mujahid from the Directorate of Youth Affairs emphasized the immense potential of Pakistan’s youth, who comprise 62% of the population.
