This letter refers to the article ‘The mighty caste system: Part-II’ (December 9, 2024) by Abdul Sattar. I found that the article was insightful and grounded in the bitter reality of the Subcontinent. The fact that India has a long way to go before it can become a true democracy and a developed nation is a universal truth. In my opinion, caste-based divisions and persecution are just as deep-rooted in Pakistan as in India.
The socialist narrative crafted by our intelligentsia has been hijacked by those from a privileged background whose socialism is merely cosmetic. The Bhutto dynasty is perhaps the most emblematic of this trend. To fix the current system, I feel work needs to be done in both India and Pakistan to craft new narratives and find pragmatic ways to build a new system and a new way of life in the region.
