Task force announced for multi-cultural diversity

Islamabad:Federal Minister for Information, National Heritage & Culture Attaullah Tarar has announced setting up of a task force to recommend how Pakistan could build on its multicultural identity to promote peace, prosperity and cohesion.

Mr Tarar was addressing a dialogue organised here by Institute of Regional Studies (IRS), while noting that, dialogue is key to building peace and prosperity, Mr Tarar highlighted that protecting minority rights and promoting culture are government priorities. Ramesh Singh Arora, Provincial Minister for Minorities, informed the audience about various initiatives being undertaken by Punjab government to protect minority rights and promote religious tourism. He shared that the Federal Government was committed to providing state-of-the-art facilities to pilgrims from within and outside the country.

Former Federal Minister Mushaal Hussein Malick who currently chairs the Peace and Cultural Organisation stated that the dialogue was not merely meant to celebrate the richness of nation’s diversity but also aimed at reimagining it as a source of strength. This dialogue is not only timely but also essential as we navigate a world fraught with polarisation and conflict, both within our borders and beyond,” she added.

Dr. Mark Allon, scholar from Australia, announced the discovery of significant manuscripts from ancient Gandhara sites that warrant national and international recognition, emphasising their role as Pakistan's gateway to the Buddhist world and a major tourist attraction.

Author and journalist Zahid Hussain stressed that national cohesion requires not only effective policies but also an enabling environment for people to express their sentiments freely. Dr Hassan Abbas from the US emphasised that Pakistan must invest intellectually and economically in the long-neglected area of diversity as it holds significant potential to elevate the country's status as a hub of great civilisations.

Japanese scholar Elli Takagi highlighted the beauty of Pakistan’s cultural heritage and potential for faith and cultural tourism. US-based envoy for Promotion of Buddhist Heritage Imran Shaukat brought out Pakistan's diversity and culture of tolerance. He underlined the need for addressing the misconception that Pakistan was unsafe claiming that many developed countries have higher crime rates.
