PESHAWAR: A writ petition was filed in the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday to seek government’s intervention to curb sectarian violence and restore law and order in the restive Kurram tribal district.

The petition, filed by Advocate Moazzam Butt, called for immediate action from the government and security agencies to stabilize the deteriorating situation in the district. The federal and provincial governments, along with the inspector general of police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, were named as respondents in the petition.

The petitioner highlighted the worsening security conditions in Kurram, where sectarian and other disputes had disrupted daily life. The ongoing unrest has impacted businesses, education, and other activities, leaving the local population in distress.

Advocate Moazzam Butt argued that both local and international factors contributed to the complexity of the crisis. He accused the federal government of failing to quell the violence and maintain peace in the district.

The petition called for engaging local stakeholders and tribal elders in negotiations to resolve disputes and end the violence. It also urged the KP government to extend full cooperation to the federal government to bring an end to violence and resolve the dispute.

This is not the first time the issue of Kurram has been brought to the PHC. An earlier petition on the matter is still pending before the court. The petitioner requested the court to direct authorities to take swift measures to restore peace and ensure the safety of residents in Kurram.
