White-ball coach Sammy to take over West Indies Test team
Antigua and Barbuda: Former captain Daren Sammy, who is currently in charge of the T20 and one-day international teams, will take over the West Indies Test team as well in the new year, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old will only take charge of the Test side from the home series against Australia in June 2025, with current coach Andre Coley taking the team to Pakistan for their tour next month.
Under his guidance, the T20I team has risen four places in the ICC rankings, advancing from ninth to fifth. This month he also led the West Indies ODI team to a dominant 3-0 series victory over Bangladesh. That follows a 2-1 home ODI series win over England in November.
“Daren Sammy has demonstrated exceptional leadership during his tenure with the white-ball teams,” said CWI president Kishore Shallow. “His vision, dedication, and ability to inspire players make him the ideal candidate to lead across all formats. “This appointment marks a bold and exciting step forward.”
