Former president Bashar al-Assad has been ousted from power in Syria in a dramatic manner, ending his family’s 54-year rule. I think that it is an absolutely atrocious fact that a single family managed to rule this country for more than half a century with no meaningful opposition or real democracy or civil society voices to oppose it. Now is an ideal opportunity for the tired and war-weary Syrian people to turn over a new page and this opportunity must not be missed. The global community (including Pakistan) should extend moral, financial, diplomatic, civil, and institutional support and guidance to the Syrian people and enable them to rebuild.
